Older-style Epson ink jet print cartridges retained their inks by means of internal sponges encased in an external plastic housing, while newer Epson replacement print cartridges enclose the inks within a complex, spongeless system of interior reservoirs. Since the design and production of the Epson Stylus Color 777, all Epson ink jet print cartridges have a smart chip installed. This chip keeps track of the printer's ink usage.
